Frequently Asked Questions…

  • Counselling & Psychotherapy are types of talking therapy drawing on various psychotherapeutic techniques.

The terms are interchangeable, however Counselling is sometimes associated with short-term work and focused on a particular issue, whereas Psychotherapy tends to be thought of as more long-term and often involves the exploration of one’s history to help impact the present and inform direction toward the future.

They are also used as personal development tools to help build upon one’s self-awareness, resilience, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.

  • Therapy is about you; I work by tailoring therapy around your specific needs. You are at the centre of our work together.

Everyone is unique and far too complex for there to be a one fix all solution. I believe that different people may need different things at different times to help alleviate their suffering and ultimately reach a place where they feel more themselves. I use an Integrative approach underpinned by a pluralistic philosophy; drawing from both our experiences whilst integrating a range of modalities such as Cognitive-Behavioural (CBT), Humanistic, and Psychodynamic theory.

  • The therapy I provide is tailored to your needs. I will discuss this with you during our first session as the number of sessions you will need depends on the nature of what you would like to achieve in therapy. Some people find single sessions to be helpful enough, and others prefer a more long-term approach using therapy for years. The length and direction of therapy is up to you.

It is generally recommended to try out at least 8 - 12 sessions. This often provides an appropriate amount of time for us to get to know each other, explore what you would like to work on, implement change in your life, and review your progress in order to create a sustainable solution for you.

  • During our first session together we will discuss your expectations of therapy, what may have brought you here today, any concerns or wishes you might have. Change is an ongoing process; you might find that your needs shift throughout our work together, and as we get to know each other. Therefore, you may find yourself revisiting past subjects as we find connections between them along the way.
